Peace negotiations? Rubio explains why US no longer exerts pressure on Russia

Several Democrats criticize US Secretary of State for the mediation of negotiations and accuse Putin of being trying to delay conversations and gain time to continue the offensive in Ukraine.

The United States expect Russia to present, in the coming days, the conditions for a ceasefire in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio considers that the terms proposed by Moscow will show Vladimir Putin’s real intentions.

This Tuesday, at a Senate audience, Rubio was criticized by several democrats about the mediation of negotiations. Jeanne Shaheen, one of the senators, said Putin is trying to delay conversations and gain time to continue the offensive in Ukraine, an idea that Rubio disagrees.

“If it is clear that the Russians are not interested in a peace agreement, it may well reach this point [exercer mais pressão sobre a Rússia]. The president [Trump] I already said it in the past. The president’s conviction, he knows that, at this moment, if we began to threaten with sanctions, the Russians will stop dialogue and it is important for us to talk to them and lead them to sit at the negotiating table, “Rubio said.
