The CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) approved the base text of the PEC (proposal for amendment to the Constitution) that ends the reelection of President of the Republic, governors and mayors from 2030.
The proposal was approved in a symbolic vote. Now the text can be analyzed in the plenary of the house, which has no date to happen. If approved in the Senate, go to the House.
The rule would be valid for the 2030 election. The rapporteur of the proposal, Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI), defined in the text that mayors elected in 2028, president and governors elected in 2030, will not be entitled to reelection.
According to PEC, presidents, governors, deputies and senators elected in 2026 and 2030 will have four years. From 2034, the period would be extended to five years.
The senators would have the mandate expanded in a staggered manner. Elected parliamentarians in 2026 would continue with eight -year term. The elected in 2030 would be nine years old, and those chosen in 2034 ten years.
For mayors and councilors, the mandates would be six years in 2028 and from 2034 onwards, five years.
