Watch our video how to prevent slugs from attacking your plants.
Beware of topping and herbs!
One of the main recommendations, which we often do not comply with, is minimizing the dressing in the evening. In the evening and morning hours in the summer is an ideal time for watering and mostly we do not want to get up in the morning. Watering is much more comfortable before dusk. Unfortunately, wet soil is an ideal environment for slugs who set off from the rule to the garden just after dark. Try to remember it, and reduce the evening watering if possible.
Slugs and Pilsers are trying to drive out from our beds by all possible means. These include aromatic herbs that can be repeated on slugs. These include lavender, sage, rosemary or wormwood. You can strategically place these herbs in different places in your garden to cover the entire area as much as possible. But will it be enough? Probably not.
What works against slugs?
Popular and very effective are beer traps. The trap should be placed so that the slug gets into it without a problem. Ideally, it should be at the same level or slightly below the level of the surrounding terrain. It is enough to pour the beer into a deeper bowl or a plunge container and leave it on the spot for several days. Continuously check the trap, sometimes surprisingly quickly filled with drowned slugs.
Various obstacles, such as sawdust, crushed shells, ashes or various other barricades, are also suitable for protecting your seedlings. Their problem is that they need to be changed. In the video mentioned remnants of one -containing chititin and also act as a mechanical protection of your seedlings because they are hard and sharp. These can also help protect the flower bed, but just do not rely on them.
A similar, but a little more sophisticated obstacle is the copper tape that slugs and Plzáci are unable to overcome. This adhesive copper tape can be found in various widths to buy in shops for gardeners and hobby markets. The tape should also be checked. Sometimes it is covered with greenery, or slugs find a different way to overcome it. However, the tape is more suitable for containers and pots, not in the flowerbed.
In the Czech Republic and in the surrounding countries, granules designed directly for the disposal of slugs are popular, based on iron phosphate. These granules are specific in that they smell very much and do not harm other animals. Hedgehogs, birds or pets are not at risk of these granules. Granules should be poured into places where slugs often move, but also slightly directly into the flowerbed.
Another very ecological possibility is the use of parasitic nematodes. These can be purchased in online organic preparation stores. The nematodes are effective, but they can be a little more expensive. However, if it is almost calamity in your garden, you will also appreciate this product, which liquidates slugs also naturally and above all efficiently.
