Britain warns against the continuing Russian cyber campaign targeted to Western logistics and technology companies.

Britain, together with several Western allies, pointed out the Russian cyber campaign on Wednesday, focusing on support for Ukraine support, such as Western logistics and technology companies. The target of these attacks were also cameras at strategic places in Slovakia. TASR reports this, according to the report of Reuters and the website of the Czech National Council for Cyber and Information Security (NÚKIB).

Behind the campaign is the unit of Russian military intelligence GRU no. 26165, also known as APT28 or Fancy Bear. According to NÚKIB, this group has been operating for more than two years and has been using various tactics such as password theft, fraudulent emails, or the abuse of software vulnerabilities. When she manages to get access to a certain device, it installs malicious malware in which she steals data.

Security risks

“This malicious campaign of the Russian Military Intelligence Service presents a serious risk to target organizations, including those involved in providing the aid to Ukraine,” said Paul Chicster, director of the British National Center of Cyber Security (NCSC).

According to NCSC, the campaign was focused on defense, IT services, navy, airports, ports and also attacked several Member States of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). Group 26165 also monitored the transport of aid to Ukraine through cameras at border crossings and other strategic places, Núkib said. According to him, the analyzes show that although most of these cameras were in Ukraine, others also occurred in Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.

Challenge

Wednesday’s warning was issued by the United Kingdom in cooperation with the United States, the Czech Republic, France, Germany and other allies. The organizations have highlighted the increased threat and calls for immediate adoption of protection measures.

“We strongly recommend organizations to get acquainted with the threat and advice to alleviate its consequences, which are part of this recommendation, helping to protect their networks,” added Chicster.
