Mining Vale reported on Tuesday, 20, that the Dam Group, located in the Mine Factory, in the municipality of Ouro Preto (MG), left the emergency level that had been decreed by the National Mining Agency (ANM). The structure has been attested to its “condition of stability”, but will be kept preventively on “alert level”.

“The structure received a positive stability declaration of stability (DCE), attesting to its safety,” the company said in a statement.

According to the mining company, the safety conditions of the structure were reinforced by stroke works and removal of damage to the dam.

Vale: Dam in Ouro Preto (MG) leaves “emergency” level to “alert”

“The decharacterization process has already allowed the removal of more than 1.78 million cubic meters of tailings so far, which corresponds to about 78% of the total volume that will be removed,” said Vale.

The company foresees that the decharacterization works of the dam will be completed in the second half of this year. The company recalls that all the dams built by the upstream method are in the process of uncharacterization, having their structures “permanently monitored” and the target of “continuous actions to improve safety”. Eighteen Vale Dams have left the emergency level since 2022.

The Group Dam is one of the 13 remaining amounts in the process of uncharacterization, and will now remain at alert, “as a preventive measure”, says the company, “with monitoring of the competent bodies until the analysis of the documentation is completed, as provided for in the legislation”.

Continues after advertising

“Vale is already taking the regulatory measures necessary to end the warning situation,” said the mining company. “Vale’s main dams are monitored 24 hours a day and 7 days a week by the company’s geotechnical monitoring centers (CMGS).”
