Deadly running over: former driver of Eduardo Cabrita begins to be judged

The case dates back to 2021, when the official car in which Eduardo Cabrita, led by Marco Pontes, ran over deadly Nuno Santos, a worker from a company that maintained A6.

The Évora Court begins this Thursday to judge the former driver of the former Minister of Internal Affairs Eduardo Cabrita, who is responsible for murder for gross negligence for the deadly running of a worker on the motorway 6 (A6), in 2021.

The case reaches trial after having gone through the instructional phase, in which, in the decision, known in October 2023, Judge Marcos Ramos decided to bring the former driver to trial.

However, the same criminal instruction judge decided not to pronounce the former Minister of Internal Affairs (MAI) Eduardo Cabrita, nor his then security head Nuno Dias.

Marco Pontes, the driver of the former minister, is thus the only one to be tried in a singular court and will be responsible for the commission of a crime of murder for gross negligence.

This Thursday, at the entrance of the court, the former driver’s lawyer rules out the hypothesis that Marco Pontes is being an undergraduate goat.

“This is a road accident, it has scapegoats,” António Samara told reporters.

The family and the Association of Self-Mobilized Citizens (TA-M), who were assistants in the process, still appealed to the instructional decision, so that Eduardo Cabrita and Nuno Dias were brought to trial.

This Thursday, the lawyer of the family victim, Joaquim Barros, again defended the need for former Minister Eduardo Cabrita in the Évora Court.

“Being the minister responsible for the displacement of all that entourage, he should legally assume this responsibility.”

The case dates back to June 18, 2021, when the official car in which Eduardo Cabrita, conducted by Marco Pontes, ran over deadly Nuno Santos, 43, a worker of a company that maintained A6, to kilometer 77.6 da Via, towards Estremoz-Évora.

On December 3, 2021, the Public Prosecution Service accused Marco Bridges of negligence homicide, having, on that same day, the then Minister of Internal Affairs presented to his resignation from office.
