In China, an unusual moment was recorded on video: hundreds of tiles suddenly fell from a tower over six centuries of history. The incident occurred last Monday and quickly became viral on Chinese social networks.
The structure in question is the tower of the Fengyang drum, erected in 1375, an imposing monument that stands out among the largest in the country and traditionally marks the beginning of ceremonies with the touch of the drum. The tower is about 320 kilometers from the capital, Beijing.
Witnesses reported that the fall of the tiles lasted in one to two minutes. Luckily, they were not injured, although the place was often frequented by children – which, according to the press, could be playing nearby if the collapse had occurred a few minutes later.
Interestingly, the tower had been the target of renewal works about a year ago, which raises questions about the durability and safety of the interventions performed.
