The British Labor Government plans to introduce the use of medicines for convicted perpetrators of sexual crime also known as chemical castration. The new program aims to reduce the risk of recurrence and the release of the overloaded prison system, TASR writes, according to AP report.
British Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood said in a statement for Parliament that they plan to enforce chemical castration in twenty prisons in two British regions. The government proposal has also undergone an independent review. “We are looking for the enforcement of such a system. Of course, it is very important that this approach is complemented by psychological examinations that focus on other causes of deviation, ” she stated.
The survey implies that chemical castration is not suitable for all sex delinquent. Mahmood refers to the finding that its introduction may reduce the risk of recurrence by up to 60 percent. It currently operates on the basis of volunteering in Germany or Denmark, in Poland it is mandatory for some types of crimes.
The introduction of chemical castration is just one of the ways of reforming the crowded prison system. Former Justice Minister David Gauke proposes to adjust the penalties for the conservative party so that prisoners can be released prematurely or that judges can more often give alternative punishments. In addition, it calls on the introduction of a system in which foreigners convicted for less than three years would be deported immediately.
The number of prisoners in England and Wales has doubled to almost 90,000 over the past 30 years. Despite the overall decline in crime, this is due to the imposition of stricter punishments due to strong pressure on the fight against crime.
