The former president of died at the age of 86 on Thursday (22), said the government. Palacio ruled between 2005 and 2007 to replace the former Mandanker, who was deposed in the midst of a popular revolt. Gutiérrez had been elected in 2003 with Palacio, a renowned cardiologist, as vice president. “We express our condolences in the face of the sensitive death of former President Alfredo Palacio,” said the presidency in the X. The Congress of Ecuador also expressed in the same social network his “regret” for the death of Palacio.

The causes of death were not disclosed. After leaving power, the former governor distanced himself from politics and dedicated himself to the gym. Palacio was born in the coastal city of Guayaquil (southwest) in 1939. He was also minister of health in the government of Mixto Durán Ballena. During his government, he appointed for a brief period as finance minister, leftist Rafael Correa, who later ruled the country for a decade (2007-2017).
