Considered the largest cave complex in the national territory, these natural formations were discovered in 1947 by a group of local explorers and became accessible to the public in 1974. In 2010, they were recognized as one of the 7 natural wonders of Portugal.

Galleries carved by water erosion

Known as Mira de Aire caves, its origin is associated with the slow dissolution of limestone by the effect of rainwater, a characteristic phenomenon of the shudder lime mass. Throughout millennia, this action has sculpted a network of galleries and cavities decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and limestone columns of various dimensions. Of the total of about 11 kilometers, it is possible to visit approximately 600 meters.

Located in Mira de Aire, in the municipality of Porto de Mós, these formations are part of the Natural Park of the Serras de Aire and Candeeiros and are among the main points of natural interest in the center of the country.

According to, the route includes zones with names that evoke the form of geological formations, such as the “source of the pearls”, the “Gallery of the Octopus”, the “organ” and the “Rio Negro”. Some natural columns resemble architectural structures of doric style, jonic or corinthial, which contributed to the designation of space as a “underground cathedral”.

Underground path with 683 steps

The route open to the public implies a descent of about 110 meters deep, traveled through 683 steps. On the surface return, visitors are transported by elevator. The visit takes place under constant weather conditions, with stabilized temperature around 17 ° C throughout the year.

Visits are conducted by guides, ensuring a safe and informed experience. Carefully projected artificial lighting enhances geological formations and prevents the proliferation of organisms that can compromise the balance of the underground ecosystem.

SKIN LIGHTING AND HERITAGE PRESERVATION

The galleries are equipped with thousands of strategically positioned light points, allowing not only the safe visualization of the route but the aesthetic appreciation of natural formations. The installation was conceived in order to respect the integrity of space and the biodiversity that surrounds it.

Speleological studies continue to be performed, revealing new branches and reinforcing the scientific importance of the place. The caves benefit from a geological and environmental framework of high heritage value.

Complementary Location and Information

Opening hours varies by time: between October and March, visits take place until late afternoon; In the hottest months, the time is extended.
