Trump prevents Harvard from having foreign students

Students who are there must be transferred or will lose the legal statute

The Trump administration revoked this Thursday the possibility of Harvard University enrolling foreign students, marking a sharp climbing between the White House and the university.

“Harvard cannot continue to enroll foreign students and current foreign students must be transferred or lose their legal statute,” the US Department of Internal Security said in a statement.

The Secretary of Internal Security, Kristi Noem, ordered her department to cancel the Harvard Student and Exchange Visitors Certification, fulfilling a promise made last month, when she required the University to deliver detailed registrations on the “illegal and violent activities” of her international students before April 30, otherwise she will lose certification.

A substantial part of Harvard’s student body may be affected. The university says it has 9,970 people in its international academic population, and data show that 6,793 international students represent 27.2% of their enrollment in the school year 2024-25.

Harvard quickly condemned the measure as “illegal” in a statement, adding that he is “totally committed to maintaining Harvard’s ability to receive international students and academics, who come from over 140 countries and enrich the university – and this nation – immeasurably.”
