The Belgian authorities withdrew a request to deprive the immunity of Princi, who faced suspicions in the Huaweigate case. The prosecutor’s office acknowledged its complete non -participation in the case.
The Belgian authorities decided to withdraw the request to deprive the immunity of the European Parliament (EP) Giusi Princi (EPP/Italy). Together with four other MEPs, she was suspected of participating in the corruption case associated with the Chinese company Huawei. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
Princi said she was investigated for participation in a meeting in June last year, which she was not even, because that day her daughter had a school performance in Italy. The MEP wrote in a social network post that a reversal in the case occurred in a “record short time”.
Rejection of accusations
“I was relieved that in less than 24 hours the prosecutor’s office retreated and acknowledged my absolute absence of Huaweigate,” she wrote.
In the case of the allegedly entangled Huawei, the authorities in Belgium have been accused by at least eight people. The accusations were preceded by police raids in Belgium, Portugal and France. This is part of the investigation launched in 2021, which concerns suspicions of unlawful payments and other gifts by Huawei in exchange for the support of MEPs in the introduction of a 5G telecommunications network.
Other entangled persons
In addition to Principles, the Belgian authorities asked the EP to withdraw the immunity of four MEPs – Fulvi Martusciall, Salvatorem de Meo (both EPP/Italy), Daniel Attard (S&D) and Nikol Minčev (renew Europe/Bulgaria). Huawei and at least three of these MEPs reject charges.
