Viktor Orbán criticizes the proposal of a ban on Russian energy to the EU. According to him, there is a risk of increasing housing and energy prices in Hungary.

The Hungarian government intends to block the proposal of the European Commission (EC), which demands a complete ban on Russian energy supply to EU countries since the end of 2027, said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday in an interview for Kossuth Radio radio station. TASR informs this based on the TASS report.

At negotiations in Brussels about these issues, Budapest should “strongly oppose the decision that would ban the use of Russian gas,” said Orbán. According to him, the measure is being prepared by the Commission will increase Hungary’s energy accounts by two billion euros per year and will cause a sharp increase in housing costs and municipal services for the population. “We should not allow the introduction of sanctions against Russian energy and the application of sanctions against Hungary,” said Orbán.

Opposition attitude of Hungary

According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, the Commission plan reflects the politics of leaders of several countries of the Union, including Germany and the Czech Republic, who, instead of trying to reduce energy prices, push them up. “They want to hurt Russia, and therefore the ban on Russian goods and help Ukraine are more important than the prosperity of our own families and our businesses,” said Orbán, adding that Hungary is an opposite view and will continue to defend it at EU meetings in Brussels.
