The classic between Fluminense and Vasco will take place this Saturday (24/05), at 18:30 (Brasília), for the tenth round of the Brazilian Championship. The duel will be at Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro.

The match is known as the classic of the giants and Sporting News brings you the reason for the name of the duel between the teams.

Why is Fluminense and Vasco the classic of the giants?

Although the first game between the teams took place in 1923, the classic between Fluminense and Vasco did not have a name defined until 2006.

At that date, the “Lance” newspaper voted to define what the classic name would be. The election lasted a week and defined that the name would be classic of the giants. Since then, the matches between the teams have won the nickname.

Who won the most giant classic?

In total, there are 380 matches between Vasco and Fluminense, with advantage for Cruzmaltino, with 149 wins, against 122 of Tricolor das Laranjeiras. In addition, the confrontation had 109 draws.

Considering goals scored, Vasco has 557 balls on the network against 515 of Fluminense. The last match between the teams was triumph of Tricolor, in Carioca 2025, 2-1.

Thinking only of direct decisions, the teams played 16 finals with eight titles for each team.

In addition, the duel between Vasco and Fluminense is the only Rio classic who had matches in Libertadores. The duels were in 1985, with two draws within the four lines. The Flu, however, ended the points of the second duel due to the irregular lineup of the athlete Gersinho.
