The most common mistakes in growing tomatoes
One of the most common mistakes that tomatoes make is the bad timing of planting. Many gardeners cannot wait for spring and plant seedlings too early, when the soil is not yet sufficiently warmed. Frosts can then damage or destroy plants. On the contrary, late planting often leads to the fact that tomatoes do not manage to ripen before the onset of colder days. The ideal time to stop occurs when there is no risk of frosts and night temperatures do not decrease below 10 ° C. An important, but often neglected step is also the hardening of seedlings, ie the gradual accustration of plants to outdoor conditions such as wind or direct sunlight. Moting an unprepared plant directly from the warm apartment to the flower bed can weaken it heavily.
Another common mistake is insufficient betting in depth and poor selection of seedlings. Tomatoes have the ability to form roots along the stem, which means that they can be planted deeper than they grew in the original pot. Properly set plant should have part of the stem covered with soil up to the first leaves. This creates a stronger root system and will be more resistant to stress. When selecting seedlings, it is worth noting the impression that greater equals better. On the contrary! Overgrown, fragile seedlings or those that have already begun to bloom are less resistant and more slow. The ideal plant is compact, with solid stem and healthy green leaves.
The way and regularity of the dressing is also significantly affected. Tomatoes hate moisture fluctuations. Changing drought and waterlogging often leads to cracking of fruits and occurrence of flowers. Plants should have access to approximately 2.5 cm of water a week, ideally in the form of slow watering to the roots. Water should never be directed to leaves, because it promotes the spread of mold. In addition to proper watering, regular planting of plants and sufficient spacing between them is essential. Too tight spacing slows down air flow, increases humidity and creates ideal conditions for spreading diseases.
Correct care, healthy tomatoes
Growing tomatoes is no science, but it requires a little care, patience and willingness to learn from their own or foreign mistakes. If you learn the correct procedures, from the selection of quality seedlings, through appropriate planting to regular watering and growth support, tomatoes will be rewarded with a rich harvest. Do not forget that a healthy and strong plant is the best defense against diseases and pests. And what is the best? Every season is a new opportunity to be a better gardener.
