Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) rebuked former minister Aldo Rebelo during his statement as a witness in the action investigating the alleged attempted coup d’état articulated by allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The hearing took place this Friday (23) and was marked by moments of tension.
Rebelo, who was also president of the House of Representatives, was asked if the then Navy Commander, Admiral Almir Garnier ,. In his response, he relativized the content of the speech attributed to Garnier, stating that it would be necessary to consider the nuances of the “force of expression” of the Portuguese language.
“When someone says ‘I’m fried’, it doesn’t mean it’s in a skillet. When it says ‘I’m tight’, it’s not literally under pressure. In the same way, ‘I’m available’ doesn’t have to be read to the letter,” said Rebelo.

The argument annoyed Minister Moraes, rapporteur of the case, who interrupted the testimony: “Were you at the meeting when Admiral Garnier said the expression? So you can’t be able to evaluate the Portuguese language at that time.”
Rebelo answered promptly: “Firstly, my appreciation of the Portuguese language is mine and I do not admit censorship.” The exchange continued with Moraes raising the tone: “If the Lord does not behave, the Lord will be arrested for contempt.”
