You may have heard that every baby in recent times was called Enzo or Valentina. Well, in 2024 the game became – and who even shone in Brazilian birth certificates was Helena. That’s right! Classic, elegant and full of history, Helena was the most registered name in the country last year, with impressive 22,533 records, according to Arpen-Brasil (National Association of Natural People Registers).
It is the first time in seven years that a female name leads the national ranking. The last time this happened was in 2016, with Maria Eduarda at the top. Since then, male names have dominated, with Miguel reigning absolute in the last four years.
But Helena didn’t reach the top of nothing – her rise was meticulously built. In 2015, it was just the 45th most common name. He went up to 21st position in 2017, 15th in 2019 and, from 2020, began to play the first places, only behind Maria Alice in 2022. With a trajectory, Helena has baptized over 444,000 Brazilian women throughout history.
According to Gustavo Renato Onsuratelli, president of Arpen-Brazil, the choice of names reflects “the cultural, religious and the media influences”-that is, the 9 soap opera still has an effect, see?
