“When we got there, we took a walk through the exhibition. And for me it was like taking a walk through my own life. I had the privilege – because it is a privilege – of having to go to all these places. Sometimes people tell me: ‘Sebastião, you are an artist.’ And I answer, ‘No, I’m a photographer.’ Because only photographers have the right to doubt, ”he said in an interview with Forbes.

He commented on the challenges of the profession. “When we go to all these regions of the world, facing all the problems and challenges you can imagine, we ask ourselves: about ethics, legitimacy, security. And it is up to us to find the answer, alone,” he said.
“How many times in my life I put the camera aside and sat down to cry? Because it was too dramatic, and I was alone.”

Salgado also commented that the photographer’s power is to be in these places. “Because a journalist can get information from one side or the other, assemble a system that will bring the correct information, but he doesn’t have to be present. A photographer, if not there, doesn’t have the image. He needs to go there,” he said.
He also commented that the photographer exposes himself a lot. “Therefore, it is a huge privilege. And when walking through the exhibition, watching a little, it is impressive how I traveled back in time, for my own life,” he said.
