The administration of has accused the University of Columbia, in New York, to violate the Federal Civil Rights Law by showing “a deliberate indifference to the hostile environment that its Jewish students empower.”
In a statement, the Civil Rights Office of the US Department of Health and Human Services accused the University Center, one of the most prestigious in the country, of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Law of 1964, which prohibits discrimination for reasons of race, color and national origin in programs and activities that receive federal funds.
According to the Office of Civil Rights (OCR), Columbia University “has continually failed in the protection of Jewish students”, citing “extensive findings of an investigation” conducted to date, when the terrorist attack of Hamas against Israel was produced and the beginning of the war by the Israeli army in Gaza.
“The findings carefully document the hostile environment that Jewish students from Columbia have had to endure for more than 19 months, which has affected their education, security and well -being,” said Anthony Archeval, interim director of the HHS civil rights office cited in the statement.
“We encourage Columbia University to collaborate with us to reach an agreement that reflects significant changes that really protect Jewish students,” he emphasizes.
The OCR estimates that the University Center failed to establish effective denunciation mechanisms against anti -Semitism until the summer of 2024, did not properly comply with its own policies and procedures by responding to the complaints of Jewish students and did not investigate or properly sanction vandalism in their classrooms, which includes the repeated representation of esstica and other universally recognized hate images, among other things.
According to the OCR, this warning is part of a broader initiative of the administration multi -institutional work group to combat anti -Semitism.
