US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said US President Donald Trump believes that the European Union (EU) proposals are not of good quality, which motivated him to suggest a 50% fixed tariff against the European bloc.

In an interview with Fox News On Friday, Bessent said the republican action “is a response to the pace of EU tariffs.”

“We hope this tariffs the European Union, they have a problem of collective action,” said the secretary, mentioning that, with the exception of the EU, negotiations for agreements with other countries “are walking well.”

Bessent commented that many Asian countries have arrived with “great business proposals” and that the US is “very advanced” from India.

About Trump’s speech about Apple, the secretary said the president wants to bring the industry back to the US and would like the American technology giant to “help the country improve the semiconductor supply chain.”

Bessent also mentioned that I do not expect the Senate to make many changes in the “great and beautiful bill”.
