Intense rains cause flooding in Rio de Janeiro

The metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro was hit by heavy rains on the night of last Friday (23), resulting in flooding in various areas of the city. The Rio Civil Defense issued alerts to residents about the forecast of moderate to strong rain.

According to the Rio Alert system, a meteorology organ of the City Hall, between 5:15 pm and 5:30 pm on Friday, significant volumes of rain were recorded. The Great Méier had an accumulated “very strong” of 18.8 mm, while Grajaú had 4 mm of “moderate” rain in the same period.

Shortly before, between 17h and 17h15, Grajaú had already registered 14.6 mm. Bangu also had “moderate” rain with 3.4 mm. The North Zone was affected with water pockets.

Time instability was influenced by the arrival of a cold front from the south of the country.

The highest instability on the coast of Rio de Janeiro was recorded at dawn on Friday (23). The Brazilian Navy issued an alert for sea hangover between Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo, and Arraial do Cabo, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday (25), is expected to improve time and predominant sun throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro.

For the end of May and early June, Climatempo points to the arrival of the first major cold wave of the year. A powerful air mass of polar origin should reach Brazil, with the potential to bring low temperatures that can affect the Southeast and Midwest, including Rio de Janeiro.

The forecast also indicates agitated sea and hangover on the Southeast coast, due to the formation of an extratropical cyclone.
