Trump makes the lifting of sanctions against Syria effective
The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced Friday that, as follow -up to the announcement of President Donald Trump more than a week ago in Saudi Arabia, the lifting of sanctions against Syria was formalized.
“Today’s actions represent the first step to fulfill the vision of the president of a new relationship between Syria and the United States. President Trump is providing the Syrian government for the opportunity to promote peace and stability, both within Syria and in Syria’s relations with its neighbors,” says Rubio in a statement.
The US Secretary of State also stressed that the objective is to “guarantee” that the sanctions “do not hinder the capacity of our partners to make investments that promote stability and advance the recovery and reconstruction efforts of Syria.”
The measures “will facilitate the supply of electricity, energy, water and sanitation, and will allow a more effective humanitarian response throughout Syria,” says Rubio, to also emphasize that Trump “has made it clear” that he hopes that relief (of sanctions) will be followed by “a rapid action of the Syrian government in important political priorities.”
