In a statement to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) this Friday (23), the senator and former vice president Hamilton Mourão (Republicans-RS) characterized the undemocratic acts that took place in January 8, 2023 as a “rod”.
The statement was in response to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) lawyer Celso Vilardi, who asked where he was on the day.
Mourão was Former Minister General Augusto Heleno, who commanded the Institutional Security Office (GSI), in the process that investigates an attempt to coup in Brazil after the 2022 elections.
The parliamentarian said he was in his new home in Brasilia, ten days after departure from the Jaburu Palace, the vice-president’s official residence.
“I learned about the tape that was happening because my son called me, turned on the TV and saw it,” replied Mourão.
“In the view of those who have already performed the function of Planalto’s military command, I knew that there was a planning to be triggered there from the detection of a threat. What in my view what happened was an inaction of the government that should have triggered the effective means,” he continued.

When the details began to be disclosed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), he said he did not see a crime in “writing nonsense”.
“We have a group of small military personnel… most reserve military personnel who, in theory, set up a plan without a foot or head. I can’t even imagine as an attempt to blow,” he said in an interview with the “Good morning Mourão” podcast in November last year.
The senator has even referred personally to the Argentine President Javier Milei, requesting that he would grant political refuge to Brazilians convicted and investigated for involvement in the acts of January 8, 2023.

Even though he was vice-president during Bolsonaro’s term, Mourão was not cited in the complaint of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).
