After mastering the three free workouts at home, she was confident of repeating last year’s pole position at the Monaco GP, but McLaren spoiled the party. He took the first position of Ferrari’s pilot on the grid in the last seconds, this Saturday (24), at the Monte Carlo circuit, and will start ahead on Sunday’s race (25).

Oscar Pistri will come out in third position, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who had his car practically rebuilt after crashing into the third free training early on the beak to the rear suspension. Red Bull’s current world champion will leave fifth.

Gabriel Bortoleto fought to put his sauber on Q2, but was still eliminated in Q1, in 16th position, by less than four hundredths compared to the 15th place, Kimi Antonelli. Brazilian teammate, German Nico Hülkenberg has advanced to Q2 and will start 13th.

In addition to the definition of pole position after the timer zero, the qualifying training was marked by heavy traffic on the track, which caused complaints between the pilots, and the abandonment of the Mercedes of George Russell, for car problems, and Kimi Antonelli, who crashed, still in Q2, causing two red flags – considering free workouts.

To avoid intense traffic, Alexander Albon was the first to go to the track in the first part of the training, stinging 1min22s. Among pole favorites, Leclerc dug 1min13s063 in the first attempt, but then the times began to fall. With the exception of Alpine’s Colapinto and Gasly, who went to the track with average compounds, the other riders bet on the soft.

During Q1, the exchange of positions was intense. 7 minutes from the end, McLaren de Lando Norris led 1min11s596 ahead of Leclerc, Pistri, Verstappen and Hamilton. 3 minutes from the closing, Leclerc recovered the lead with 1min11s229, and remained ahead to the end, followed by Norris, Piostri, Verstappen, Russell and Hamilton.

Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, who even made the ninth time, ended his last attempt with 1min11s908, occupying 16th place, less than 4 hundredths behind Kimi Antonelli, the 15th. Thus, the Sauber pilot was out of Q2, eliminated alongside Bearman, Gasly, Stroll and Colapinto. In the last minute Antonelli hit his Mercedes and the first section ended under red flag.

Leclerc recorded the best time as soon as his first lap at Q2, but was soon surpassed by Norris and Verstappen. Without power, Russell stopped inside the tunnel with electrical problems and the red flag was fired again, causing the abandonment of another Mercedes – it was the first time the year that the British pilot was out of Q3.

On the return of cars to the track, for the final 10 minutes of Q2, Ferrari maintained the domain, with Leclerc and Hamilton, until four minutes, when Norris, with 1min10s570, passed ahead of the pair. The Briton remained leadership ahead of Leclerc, Albon, Pistri, Verstappen and Hamilton. They fell on Q2 Sainz, Tsunoda, Hulkenberg, Russell and Antonelli.

In the last part of the training, McLaren showed its strength and placed its cars ahead of Ferrari on the first lap and remained ahead. The 20 second of the end, Leclerc took the lead with 1min10s063, but Lando Norris broke the track record two seconds from the end with 1min09s954 and led to pole.

The Monaco GP, the eighth stage of the season, will be held this Sunday (25), from 10am (Brasília time).
