Sound of the implosion of the Titan submarine is revealed in a new recording; listen

The sound of the implosion of the submersible Titan, which occurred during an expedition to the wreckage of Titanic, was recorded by equipment of the support ship accompanying the mission. The recording reveals the moment when the structure fails and shows the reaction of Wendy Rush, director of Oceangate and wife of Stockton Rush, pilot of the vessel. The accident occurred in June 2023 and resulted in the death of the five crew on board.

The images, released on Friday (23/5) by British broadcaster BBC, show Wendy in front of a computer, following in real time the descent of Titan. At one point, she hears a sound similar to a beat and asks, “What was this crash?”

Shortly thereafter, a message informs that the submersible had released two pesos, which, in normal situations, would indicate the beginning of the surface climb. At first the team interpreted the signal as part of the standard procedure.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG), however, later confirmed that the noise was actually the sound of the implosion of the shell of the vessel.

Titan case

Titan lost contact about 90 minutes after starting the descent at an estimated depth of 3,800 meters.

On board were, in addition to Stockton Rush, British-Paquistanian businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman, British explorer Hamish Harding and French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet. Everyone died on the spot.

Investigations conducted by USCG pointed out that the submersible hull, made of carbon fiber, has had signs of structural failure since the previous year. During a dive in 2022, passengers reported hearing a strong snap.

At the time, Rush would have explained that it was a simple structural displacement. However, later technical examinations indicated that the noise was caused by deletion, a process in which the carbon fiber layers separate, compromising the resistance of the material.

Titan’s project had already been criticized even before the accident. Experts pointed to the lack of independent certifications and the use of materials considered unconventional for submersible depth as risk factors.

One of the most emphatic critics was explorer Victor Vescovo, who even compared the trips on Titan to a “Russian roulette” and said he warned Stockton Rush about the dangers involved.
