Although it is still not very popular in Poland, it is worth getting interested in it – especially if you care about healthy complexion, resistance and good vision. How to eat tangelo? What is the properties and what is it best to combine? We explain everything below.
In Poland, hardly anyone heard about Tangelo. What is this fruit? This is a unique citrus that was created from the crossword puzzle and grapefruit (or pomelo). The name of the fruit is a cluster of words Tangerine (mandarin) and pomelo – which perfectly reflects its origin. Although it looks a bit like a large mandarin, it has a more elongated shape with a characteristic thickening at the base, which immediately catches the eye. Tangelo skin is thin, intensely orange and very easy to peel – you can easily handle it without a knife. Inside, there is an extremely juicy, slightly sour flesh with an intense, citrus aroma.
Depending on the variety – Minnela is the most popular – The Tangelo taste combines the freshness and lightness of the mandarin with the expressive character of grapefruit. It is a fruit that can surprise and makes it difficult to stop on one piece.
We already know that this is a delicious fruit, but one more important question remains. What properties does Tangelo have? This is a real vitamin bomb. This fruit contains a large amount of vitamin C, thanks to which it supports immunity, accelerates skin regeneration and works like a natural antioxidant. Regular reaching for Tangelo can positively affect the appearance of the skin – it brightens and supports the fight against signs of skin fatigue.
Carotenoids contained in Tangelo (including beta-carotene) are valuable to eye health and support the proper functioning of the sight. Fruit is also a source of dietary fiber, which facilitates digestion and helps to maintain satiety. Thanks to the low caloric content, Tangelo will work both for people who care about the line and those who are simply looking for a light, refreshing snack between meals.
Tangelo tastes best – Just as a fast, juicy snack. The fruit is most convenient to peel with your hands – its skin is thinner than in classic oranges, but more susceptible to tearing than grapefruit peel. Just cut it lightly with a knife and remove it like a tangerine. Inside you will find a flesh divided into segments that are easy to separate and eat without much mess. Pips appear rarely, but it’s worth being prepared for them.
How to eat tangelo in a more original form? It is also perfect as a salad add -on – both fruit and dry. Its sweet and sour taste goes well with rocket, avocado, nuts, feta cheese or grilled chicken. You can also prepare refreshing juices and smoothies, and even add to the marinade to fish and seafood – the citrus note perfectly breaks fat and gives the dishes fresh. In the dessert version, Tangelo will be great in a duet with dark chocolate, Greek yogurt or citrus jelly.
Although Tangelo is not as popular as oranges or grapefruits, it is worth having them on a radar, especially in the winter season. It appears on store shelves mainly from November to March and often disappears as quickly as it appears. His intensively orange peel and the characteristic “spout” by the tail make it easy to recognize among other citrus.
It is winter – when our body especially needs immunity and vitamin C – Tangelo can be a delicious and healthy alternative to classic citrus. When buying them, it is worth choosing firm fruit with intact skin. Store in the fridge, they keep freshness up to two weeks.
