A new recording revealed last Friday (24) brought a key element for investigations into the death of 18-year-old Kauã dos Santos, hit by a firing of the Military Police in the Tiradentes City neighborhood, East Zone of Sao Paulo.

The video, obtained by CNN With the young man’s family, he shows one of the police saying “he turns, turns” to his colleague during the action, moments before the shot that killed Kauã in November 2024.

The speech, recorded by the agents ‘own body cameras, raised suspicions about the PMs’ conduct and motivated questions about the transparency of the approach. The São Paulo Public Defender’s Office had already contested the version presented by the police, who claim that the young man was armed and tried to escape. However, according to the Defender’s Office, images analyzed and testimonials of witnesses indicate that Kauã did not carry a weapon.

Police officers continue to

The Secretariat of Public Security reported that the Military Police Inquiry (IPM) was completed and sent to the judiciary. The police involved remain away from the streets. In parallel, the Civil Police investigates the case through the Department of Homicides and Protection of the Person (DHPP). The calculation follows under confidentiality and aims to clarify all circumstances of the occurrence.

In the camera records, it is possible to observe the moment when one of the police makes the verbal warning to the colleague. Shortly thereafter, there is a change in equipment positioning, which has been interpreted as an attempt to reduce the field of view of the recording.

Contradictions

The initial version presented by the Military Police said that Kauã would have reacted to the approach and pulled a gun, which, according to the corporation, motivated the shot. The Public Defender, however, states that so far there is no proof that the young man was armed.

“There is no image so far that Kauã was carrying firearm or made any movement that threatened the integrity of the police,” the agency said in a statement.

The Defensoria requested complete access to the images and documents that make up the police inquiry. The report of the official expert has not yet been disclosed.
