In Japan, the medical case of a 25 -year -old man who was diagnosed with the so -called “falling head syndrome” after using his mobile phone in a hunched position, as reported by the media, has come to light, as reported by the media which describes it as a “rare and quite worrying” case.
The incident was recently published in the Medical Magazine JOS Case Reports and is accompanied by a strong recommendation to the public about the serious consequences of a bad prolonged posture.
The young Japanese spent hours every day hunched over his mobile, with his head permanently inclined, they report. This habit had begun after adolescence, when it was socially isolated due to intense bullying and abandoned studies. From that moment, he spent most of the time alone, with the look fixed on the screen of his device.
As a result of this position he developed a lump in the neck until he completely lost the ability to raise his head. “The curvature was so pronounced that his chin rested permanently on his chest,” said the same medium.
The young man began to suffer unbearable neck pains and difficulty swallowing in 2023, which caused a rapid weight loss. Medical exams revealed a serious deformation of cervical vertebrae, as well as damage to the upper spine, consequences of prolonged tension and an overextension of the neck muscles.
The doctors, after several tests, decided to operate. The surgeries included the extraction of parts of damaged vertebrae and scar tissue, as well as the placement of screws and metal rods to align and stabilize the neck. Six months after the operation, the patient was able to raise his head again and in a year the evolution was considered extremely satisfactory, with a significant improvement of mobility and posture.
