The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, was distinguished with the Alumni Technical Award, which recognizes former students of the Higher Technical Institute (IST) for its “excellence path”.
The prize, today announced, was delivered on Friday night in the technical gala Alumni, one of the events that celebrated the 114th anniversary of the institution.
“The technician was the institution that changed the way I see the world and how I see others,” said António Guterres, quoted in a statement.
Degree in Electrical Engineering by this institution, Guterres added that “more than ever, science and technology are fundamental in the discovery of solutions to the greatest challenges of humanity.”
IST President Rogério Colaço stressed that this distinction is a tribute to the career of Guterres, but also of “values that inspire generations of engineers and scientists: public service, global solidarity and ethical leadership”.

In addition to Guterres, who received the Technical Award Alumni – Career, also Maria Vilar, founder and executive president of Immersiv Studios, was distinguished with the Young Entrepreneur Award, in which was the first edition of these prizes.
