Skalka as a refuge for useful animals: how to establish it and plant it

Skalka can be more than a nice corner of gardens with stones and dry -loving plants. When it is a little different, it turns into a small natural world full of life. It is the stones, slots and diverse flowers that create ideal conditions for a lot of useful animals – from bumble bees and bees through lizards to insects, which helps to keep the pests at bay.

The rock garden does not have to be just an aesthetic element of the garden that will delight the eye by combining stones and low plants. If we create it with thought, it can turn into a small paradise for useful animals – from bees and butterflies to lizards to pestics and solitary bees that maintain balance in the ecosystem. And it is the natural garden above all, creating a space that is not only beautiful but also alive.

Lots of shelters for small insects

The basic advantage of rock is that it provides a number of small shelters. Stone slots and dry walls are ideal for reptiles, insects and spiders. Just leave a few larger stones half -recessed into the soil and leave free gaps between them. On the other hand, small stones and gravel will serve as drainage and help keep the rock garden dry where it is needed.

When building it is best to choose a sunny place, ideally on a slope, where natural water flows. The basis is a permeable base – a pulp, gravel or rubble on which we layer the permeable soil with the admixture of the sand. It should be poor in nutrients, because most rock gardens come from mountains and rocky areas where lush vegetation would not have a chance to survive.

Both pollinators for bees and beauty immense

As far as planting is concerned, it is betting not only because of beauty. Breaks, houseleeks or thymes are like a magnet for pollinators. If you add sage, lavender or sage to them, you literally pull swarms of bees and butterflies. Skalka is also ideal for planting thyme, which smells beautiful, tastes and blooms all summer. Larger stones, among which shant or perennials grow, will give a shady refuge for useful insects.

“The composition of plants of different heights and sizes gives each rock a much more natural look. The trees can be reached for juniper. The ornamental grasses are especially popular skeleton and cavity, or high cortaderies. says David Benda, expert from Hornbach.

Do not forget a little clutter – an old piece of wood, a pile of twigs or a flat stone can be exactly what the hedgehog or snake is looking for. If you incorporate a small shallow water element into the rock garden, attract frogs or dragonflies. And this is a life that you will not see in a classic garden with an English lawn.

So the rock garden does not have to be just about flowers. It can be io life – quiet, useful and extremely fascinating. It is enough to set it up to respect the natural needs of nature. And then just look quietly who will move in to you.
