United States President Donald Trump said his government wants the “names and countries” of the thousands of Harvard University international students, suggesting that foreign countries, especially those hostile to the US, contribute to their students’ education.
“Why doesn’t Harvard say that nearly 31% of their students are from foreign countries, and yet these countries, some not friendly to the United States, pay nothing for their students’ education, nor do they intend to do so?” Trump wrote in a social truth on Sunday morning (25).
The president stated that his government wants to “know who these foreign students are,” saying that the university “is not exactly transparent.”

About 27% of Harvard’s student body comes from abroad, the university has already released a list (in October 2024) of the countries of origin of foreign students, with most of China, followed by Canada, India, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
In the school year 2024–2025, 6,793 undergraduate and postgraduate students were enrolled in the educational institution from at least 147 countries and territories.
Foreign students “are not eligible for any federal financing,” as observed in the Harvard website financial aid section.
