The answer to two short questions is not easy and is not even possible. It always depends on the type of tree species, which is a hedge formed. Otherwise, and at other times we will treat coniferous fences, otherwise the deciduous ones. In addition, we have to distinguish whether the fences are evergreen or deciduous. Deciduous
For deciduous deciduous living fruits, we have two dates for pruning and adjusting. It is the first and the second pruning in one year, first at the end of winter, or soon in the spring, and then in late summer. The first intervention should be made even before the first leaves start to sprout, when the plant is in the resting phase and the cut does not stress it so much.
Remove the main problems
The aim will be to remove damaged or withered branches and basic shaping of the fence during winter. The second cut comes in September and serves to maintain the shape of a hedge and thickening. Do not leave the procedure for a later time, the trimmed branches must recover and the new shoots.

If you have bought an evergreen hedge, you can only cut it once a year, but experts recommend using two terms. The main cut that you should definitely not miss is reserved for the end of spring, or the beginning of summer, ie the time after the first wave of intensive growth in that year. The second intervention can then be done at the end of the summer, and if we embark on such work, we can be sure that even in the spring we will find a fence in perfect condition and beautiful shape.
Conifers only once …
Then there are still coniferous fences that are less demanding on pruning than the deciduous ones. They are cut once a year, at the interface of spring and summer. For some species, such as yew, we can also make a light summer cut, but can do without it. When cutting conifers, always be careful not to interfere with the old wood. This is most likely not to hit these trees and you would soon mourn the result of your well -intentioned work.
Keep important rules
Now we know when, but we have not yet woken up how to cut. The basic rule is always clean and very sharp scissors that do not damage the twigs more than necessary. We need straight and completely smooth cut, otherwise they can get a disease into the fence, which we will rather avoid. To prevent this, let’s also choose dry weather. Beware of cutting a cut
How deep can we hit the fence? It has already been stated that the conifers must only be cut carefully, within new additions. We can interfere somewhat deeper into deciduous fences, but if you take care of them regularly, it will not be needed at all. It is sufficient to maintain the desired shape.
Let the sun up to the ground
When cutting any hedge of any hedge, you also remember the rule that the sun’s rays should get IK with the lowest branches. So shape it slightly conventional, with the upper edge will be a little narrower than the base. This avoids falling and drying of the lower branches. In a few years you would have a hedge that will start at a height of one meter. Such would hardly fulfill his function. One of the other rules that should be remembered is the need to cut a young fence more often to thicken more faster – and the elder then leave his flights to wisdom.
