Result may depart from the club’s president, suspected in case involving the contract with the book House Vaidebet

The Deliberative Council of Vote on Monday (26.MAI.2025) one of the impeachment requests against President Augusto Melo. The meeting will be held at the club’s headquarters, in Parque São Jorge, in the east of São Paulo, from 18h.

The process involves accusations related to the contract with Vaidebet, violations of the general law of sports and disrespect for the club’s statute. There are two other impeachment requests against the leader, related to the same theme.

The Corinthians agreement with Vaidebet was announced in January 2024, with estimated amount of R $ 370 million for 3 seasons, being the largest in the club’s history until then.

The partnership was broken in June of the same year, after complaints that an intermediate company would have passed on part of the contract committee to a firm linked to an alleged “orange”, which caused questions about the business. The case had great repercussion and contributed to the wear and tear of the club’s institutional image.

The suspicions intensified with a report from the São Paulo Civil Police released on Friday (15.MAI). The document shows that more than R $ 1 million of the intermediation of R $ 1.4 million paid by Corinthians ended up in the company UJ Football, linked to the CCP (first command of the capital), according to investigations.

For this reason, Melo was indicted by the Civil Police on suspicion of theft qualified by abuse of trust, criminal association and money laundering. The leader denies illegalities. UJ Football denies having calls with the CCP.

CLUB PROCESS

In January 2025, the Council approved by tight margin the opening of the impeachment process: 126 votes favorable and 114 against the 240 counselors present. The meeting ended before the final vote for safety reasons.

There is divergence about the electoral college of the current session. The President of the Deliberative Council, Romeu Tuma Jr., defends the right to vote of all about 300 counselors. Other groups argue that only those present in the January vote should participate. In similar votes, about 250 counselors often attend.

The rite will have 30 minutes for the exhibition of the president of the Ethics Commission, Roberson Medeiros, and the same time for the defense of Melo, who must be represented by lawyer Ricardo Cury. Representatives of the Legal Committee and the group that presented the impeachment request may also comment.

Voting will be confidential, by means of paper banknotes, and the calculation will occur immediately after closing.

The Corinthians Statute lists 5 reasons for the dismissal of a president: an infamous crime with a final judgment, damage to the club’s image or heritage, accounts failure, statutory infraction and irregular or fear management.

If the majority of the present counselors approve impeachment, Melo will be immediately removed and replaced interim by Vice President Osmar Stábile. The decision will still need to be ratified by the General Assembly of the partners, called by Romeu Tuma Jr. within five days.

If the Assembly rejects the dismissal, Melo resumes the position. If confirmed, the Deliberative Council will elect a new president to complete the term by the end of 2026.

Melo says he will not resign, preferring to face the process. The plaintiffs claim that their actions and omissions have impaired the club’s image and may have violated the General Law of Sport.
