Former Defense Minister was threatened by arrest by STF minister; claims that he was not intimidated and criticizes “double insecurity” in the country
Former Defense Minister Aldo Rebelo responded to the criticism and threats of the Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes. To the Poder360Rebelo said no Moraes and waiting for a public apology.
On Friday (23.MAI.2025), after a chat between the two, during the testimony of the former defense holder in the criminal action on attempted coup. Rebelo, who was heard as a defense witness to former Navy Commander Almir Garnier, had said the Admiral’s phrase- “Leave available” former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) troops in the event of an attempted coup- “It cannot be taken literally.”
To the Poder360Rebelo defended the Armed Forces of accusations related to January 8, comparing the current judicial treatment with persecution of the past.
Poder360: When the minister Alexander said that the Lord could be arrested for contempt, were you intimidated? Do you want to do something practical about this?
Aldo Rebelo: “I was not intimidated. My generation faced the repression of the military government and that was not intimidating me either. What I can do is wait for an apology from Minister Alexandre de Moraes.”
Poder360: Are you afraid of retaliation after this episode?
Aldo Rebelo: “I am not afraid, because there is no reason for retaliation. I have never responded to any lawsuit in the Supreme Court and I have the institution’s greatest respect and personal appreciation for some of its members, although it keeps profound differences related to expanded attributions of the Court invading prerogatives of other powers, and thus contributing to the installment of the double insecurity that lives the country: the legal insecurity and the state, and institutional insecurity, and institutional insecurity, and institutional insecurity in the relationship, and institutional insecurity in the relationship, and institutional insecurity in relationship among the constituted powers themselves. ”
Poder360: Government politicians silenced about the episode, but the opposition linked to Bolsonaro came out in support of the Lord on social networks. Did you feel welcomed somehow?
Aldo Rebelo: “The best welcome is that of my conscience, not giving in to principles and values that I protected throughout life. I have gratitude for the trust and solidarity received, but do not complain of those who silence in the face of serious facts of the institutional life of our homeland.”
Poder360: How do you evaluate the conduct of criminal action for attempted “blow” in the Supreme? Do you believe in the former president’s innocence? Would you testify in favor of him?
Aldo Rebelo: “The Federal Supreme Court has already incurred serious errors that have compromised its important image for democracy and the population. In times, it authorized the deportation of a pregnant political prey, Olga Benário, to be murdered in a Nazi concentration camp, recently welcomed Habeas Corpus of one of the heads of organized crime in the country, causing the judiciary to be embarrassed. It does with balance, and the balance must be the impression of the one who judges. ”
What I see is the reproduction in the case of the defendants of the January 8 of the same condemnatory emulation that moved sectors of the judiciary against the accused of crimes in the government of President Lula. The paradox is that there are always unsuspecting groups willing to applaud when the persecuted or the convict does not share his political orientation. ”
Poder360: How do you evaluate military participation in accusations?
Aldo Rebelo: “The Armed Forces constitute the most reliable corporation and more committed to national interests, accumulating the double mission of defense of the homeland and building the nation, supporting in the social area, infrastructure, science and technology the actions of the national state. And if the Armed Forces have made mistakes in the past, accusing them of coup today is more than an injustice, it is a mistake, paraphrasing the French state.”
