In addition to posting on the issue at X (former Twitter), the position was released as an official note by the Presidency of the Republic.

“This episode symbolizes, in all its dimensions, the cruelty and inhumanity of a conflict that opposes a strongly armed state against the defenseless civilian population, victimizing daily women and innocent children,” Lula continued.

Lula then states that the actions taken in Gaza are no longer about defense, the fight against terrorism or the release of hostages, but “revenge.” The president considers that there is a genocide promoted in Gaza.

“This is no longer a right of defense, to combat terrorism or seek the liberation of hostages in the power of Hamas. What we see in Gaza today is revenge. The sole purpose of the current phase of this genocide is to deprive the Palestinians from the minimum life conditions to expel them from their legitimate territory,” he added.

Historically, Brazil defends a solution to the region with two states: Israel and Palestine. This Sunday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, participated in Madrid, Spain, a meeting to discuss the possibility. On the occasion, he met Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, according to Itamaraty.

The Brazilian government defends the international recognition of Palestine as a state and its admission as a full member of the UN.

According to Itamaraty, in the speech during the conference, Minister Mauro Vieira “criticized the inaction of the international community in the face of the” massacre “of innocent civilians in Gaza, and warned that the story will not admit excuses for this attitude.” The speech goes in the same line as President Lula’s position.

The Brazilian minister stated that “no national interest, no consideration of domestic policy justify silence in the face of crimes that erode the foundations of the international legal system.”
