The state media of North Korea have reported Monday that their new destroyer is under repair, and that a new detention has been made, a senior official.
“In the place of the destroyer’s launch accident, the works are being actively carried out to completely restore the balance of the warship under the technical guide of a group of experts, as planned,” said the North Korean state agency KCNA on Monday.
He also added that Ri Hyong-Son, deputy director of the Department of Munitioning Industry, has been arrested for its involvement in the accident, in which it is considered that it had “great responsibility.”
North Korea reported on Sunday of the arrest of several officers for its connection with the accident, which occurred during the launch of a new destroyer, within the framework of the investigation that is carrying out the incident.
The detainees were Kang Jong-Chol, the chief engineer of the Shipyard of Cheongjin, where the event took place; The head of the helmet construction workshop, Han Kyong-Hak, and the Deputy Director of Administrative Affairs, Kim Yong-Hak, whom the regime described as “responsible for the accident,” according to Kcna.
The accident occurred last Wednesday during the destroyer’s launch that was taking place in the presence of the regime leader, Kim Jong-un, who has directly responsible for several agencies, including the Department of the Munitions Industry of the Central Committee of the Workers Party.
This type of public recognition of technical or administrative failures by North Korea is unusual, since the regime usually hides incidents that can be interpreted as signs of weakness or incompetence, especially in strategic sectors such as the military.
Pionyang has minimized the damage suffered by the ship, ensuring that “they are not serious”, but has promised to purify responsibilities for what considers an “unforgivable criminal act” for “the imprudence, irresponsibility and the empiricist attitude little scientific” that have allowed something like that.
