Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, said the government will make a “total trade defense” if Import rates announced by Donald Trump lead to the redirection of foreign products to Brazil.
According to Alckmin, although national agribusiness can be favored by opening new markets or expanding exports to China, Brazilian industry should face the scenario with caution.
“The industry needs to be aware that this movement does not result in a flood of products to be dumped in Brazil. We are with magnifying glasses. It is total business defense. It is not protectionism, but legitimate protection. We have triggered all available anti -dumping mechanisms to defend industry and employment in Brazil,” he said.
The statements were made at an event made by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI).
This is not the first time Alckmin has been concerned about the possibility of a flood of foreign products to enter the country due to distortions in international trade.
In April, Alckmin even stated that the government would rigorously monitor “import flows.
