Apolinario wants greater reinforcement of strategic cooperation between Algarve, Alentejo and Andalusia

The chairman of the Algarve Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR), José Apolinário, proposed to Alentejo and Andalusia the creation of working groups to deepen synergies in strategic areas for the development of the European, was released Monday.

In a statement, the Algarve CCDR advances that the objective is to “deepen synergies in strategic areas for sustainable and cohesive development of the European” that brings together the Algarve and the Alentejo to the Spanish region of Andalusia.

The president of the CCDR of the Algarve, José Apolinário, wrote a massive to the president of the Andalusian Board, Juanma Moreno, and the president of CCDR Alentejo, António Ceia da Silva, to ask for “a reflection” on this matter.

The southernmost region of mainland Portugal proposes the constitution of these groups among the three regions, by the end of July 2025, and the presentation, until September 30, of the work plan for the next two years.

These working groups should involve, according to the proposal, public and private entities, universities, research centers, business associations, intercity communities, municipalities and local development organizations.

It highlights as a priority the joint work in the domain of water, biodiversity and health of soils, with the objective of promoting more sustainable management of natural resources, ensuring water resilience of the three regions, mobilizing European funds for new sources and intelligent water management and protecting sensitive ecosystems in Guadiana Valley.

It also intends to discuss topics such as preserving species such as Iberian lynx, preventing and combating invasive species and promoting good practices to improve soil quality.

Another priority axis pointed out is that of mobility and transionic connectivity, which includes the monitoring of the construction of the new international bridge between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar de Guadiana, road and rail infrastructures that improve the link between the regions, especially the Faro-Huelva-Seville rail connection and the appreciation of cyclable paths.

In the area of ​​economy, innovation and blue growth, the Algarve proposes the reinforcement of cooperation in regional and European strategies for the development of the Blue Economy, with special attention to the navigability of the Guadiana River, the desalination, the algae and the protection of the marine environment.

It also argues that the European applies to the European Sea Day celebrations in 2027.

In the field of culture, cultural heritage and tourism, the Algarve defends “an integrated appreciation of Raia’s material and immaterial cultural heritage, the promotion of joint events and cultural programs, such as the Spain and Culture Show and the creation of an Iberian mobility program in tourism and hospitality, like Erasmus”.

In the area of ​​Civil Protection and climate change, CCDR proposes the development of interperoper technology platforms and promoting fast alerting networks and joint forest fires prevention actions.

The Algarve also proposed the constitution of a special housing working group, to share good practices and public policies in access to accessible and social housing, with the support of the European cohesion funds.
