Are you in low medical? Find out how much you can even receive (and for how long)

When a worker is required to suspend his professional activity due to illness, the impact is not only physical. The absence of income can have direct consequences in the monthly budget, so the support of low social security becomes essential.

The disease allowance is precisely the expected mechanism to mitigate this break, being calculated based on the remuneration of reference and the duration of the low.

Financial support in case of prolonged disease

According to Social Security, the value to receive varies due to the time when the worker remains unable to perform his activity.

Thus, the longer the duration of the disease, the longer the percentage of remuneration guaranteed by the subsidy.

Support percentages adjusted to the low time

The levels are clear: up to 30 days of disability, the worker receives 55% of his reference remuneration.

If the situation lasts between 31 and 90 days, this amount rises to 60%. From 91 consecutive days, it is 70%, and exceeding 365 days, the subsidy reaches 75%.

Minimum value guaranteed by law

According to the same source, regardless of the percentage applied, there is a minimum daily value ensured: 5.23 euros per day.

This amount corresponds to 30% of the daily value of the Index of Social Support (IAS), whose value in 2025 is 522.50 euros.

There is also an additional limit: If the 30% of the IAS are higher than the worker’s net remuneration, it receives all the net remuneration, thus avoiding sharp damage to those who earn lower wages.

We recommend:

How the reference remuneration is calculated

The reference remuneration corresponds to the average salaries declared in the first six months of the last eight prior to the month in which the worker failed to work.

The calculation is based on social security records.

This support is intended for dependent workers, economically dependent independent workers, domestic service workers and investigative pockets, provided that they comply with the required guarantee deadlines and have contributions up to date.

Payment of disease allowance is not immediate. For workers due to others, support begins to be paid from the fourth day of disability. In the case of independent workers, support begins only on day 11.

Special situations with different percentages

There are also particular situations, such as tuberculosis disease, hospital hospitalization of child with disabilities or temporary disability situations by work accident, where support can be 100% of the reference remuneration.

Importance of Medical Certificate and Certification

The allowance is only attributed based on a temporary disability (AMIT) medical certificate issued electronically and communicated directly to social security.

Certification is essential to ensure the eligibility and activation of support.

The disease allowance can be attributed for a maximum period of 1,095 days (three years), provided that there is a medical certification that justifies the disability.
