Between Rio and Sea, this beach borders the Alentejo and the Algarve and is one of the 7 wonders of Portugal

Between Serra Alentejana and the Algarve coast, there is a nook that combines the best of both worlds, a beach where it can swim in both freshwater and salty water, surrounded by cliffs, birds and silence. It’s called Odeceixe Beach, and one of the 7 wonders of Portugal has been elected.

According to the Portugal Blog from North to South, this beach marks the transition between two regions of the country and offers a rare and engaging landscape, where nature imposes its rhythm and drawing.

A rare meeting between Rio and Mar

The main uniqueness of Odeceixe Beach is Ribeira de Seixa, which flows into the Atlantic after traveling three kilometers to the sea.

This river presence creates a freshwater zone by the sand, turning hate a destination that is, at the same time, sea and river beach.

According to the same source, the beach configuration is deeply influenced by the energy of the floods and the amount of sediments carried by the stream, especially during the winter.

A sculpted landscape in shale

The natural scenario is dominated by shale cliffs and gradevaques, characteristics of the region. These rock formations give the place a dramatic aspect and at the same time provide protection against the strong winds.

In the highest areas, such as the local viewpoint, it is possible to observe the so -called “White Tip”, which delimits the southern cove, offering a broad panoramic of the coastline.

Wildlife and natural tranquility

The beach framing is part of the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park and Costa Vicentina. According to the same source, this is the only place in Europe where storks can be observed to nest in the rocked by the sea, an unusual phenomenon that attracts ornithologists and curious.

In addition to the white stork, the zone houses other species such as the peregrine hawk and the red-red jack.

Biodiversity is rich and the poorly intervened environment reinforces the beach appeal with those looking for tranquility and contact with nature.

A beach with national and European distinctions

Odeceixe beach is not just a local natural beauty. As referred to in the Portugal Blog from North to South, it is part of the list of “7 Wonders – Beaches of Portugal” and was also highlighted by the European Best Destinations platform as one of Europe’s well -kept secrets.

These distinctions underline the landscape and environmental value of a place where it is still possible to find space and silence even in the summer months.

A place where time runs slowly

With its calm waters, extensive sand and few buildings in sight, Odeceixe offers a different experience from the typical agitation of many algarve beaches.

The access is made by a serpentant road that goes down between green hills, ending next to a beach where the river meets the sea.

According to the newspaper, Ana Fernandes describes this beach as a fusion of environments: “between sea and pool, space and light, Alentejo and Algarve”. A place that, depending on the tide, can reveal as two distinct beaches or even three.

Hate as a gateway to the Algarve

Geographically, Odeceixe is located at the far north of Aljezur, already in the Algarve, but culturally keeps a foot in Alentejo, and this duality marks the character of village and beach, visible in traditions, gastronomy and landscape itself.

The beach can be visited at any time of the year, especially recommended for families, nautical sports and hiking lovers along the Vicentina Rota coastal tracks.
