Not all coins are worth what is stamped. Some editions of 2 €, especially commemorative or with limited runs, can reach amazing values in the collector market. According to the Ekonomist website, there are circular coins that can be worth hundreds or even thousands of euros, and often go unnoticed at the bottom of a little bit.
The best known among these rarities is the currency issued by Monaco in 2007, in honor of Princess Grace Kelly. But there are many others that, although apparently common, can yield good profit to those who find them.
Grace Kelly’s coin can be worth more than 4,000 €
In 2007, the principality of Monaco pointed out the 25th anniversary of the death of Princess Grace Kelly with a special edition of 2 €.
The princess’s effigy appears recorded on one side and, according to the ekonomist, this detail, coupled with the limited circulation of 20,000 copies, makes each of these coins reach € 4,000 on online platforms like eBay.

Other Monaco currencies also enter the list
Still inside the Monegasco territory, there is another rare currency: the commemorative of the 800th anniversary of the Monaco Castle.
Launched in 2015, this currency had an even lower production, only 10,000 units, and is already sold by values of around 1,000 €, according to the same site.

Vatican and São Marino also issue coveted coins
In 2005, the Vatican issued a coin to mark the 20th anniversary of World Youth Day. 100 thousand copies have been produced and today each can be worth about 300 €.

Already St. Marino, although not part of the European Union, has coins with the euro and, according to the sisters in 2004 can be valid between 180 € and 190 €.

The Spanish currency with error was valued
It is not always the theme of the currency that gives it value. In 2009, an edition alluding to the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union gained prominence in Spain due to a manufacturing error: the stars were coinned with a different size than usual. This anomaly transformed the currency into a collector piece, currently evaluated at about 100 €.

Finnish coins also stand out
Finland appears twice in this list: with the currency of the widening of the European Union in 2004, today with market value around 70 €.

And with the 2008 coin that celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The latter can reach € 33, even though it has been issued in larger quantities.

Coins that mark the euro are also worth more than they seem
In 2011, several countries celebrated the birth of the single currency with commemorative editions. Portugal issued one of these currencies, but it is the Malta version that stands out in the market: coined in 430 thousand units, is valued at about 20 € per copy.

Already another commemorative currency of Austria, of 2005, is around 13 €.

The currency of the Portuguese presidency also has value
Finally, a symbolic note for the currency created in 2007 to mark the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union.

With two million copies put in circulation, this currency has a more modest market value, about 7 €, but it is a relevant piece from the historical and symbolic point of view for the Portuguese collectors.
If you keep coins of 2 € at home, it may be worth peeking the souvenir. It is never known if among the day-to-day exchange a small treasure will not be hidden.
