Even roads, turns, intersections or signs are still evolving. There is always a lot to improve and in Sweden they have now come up with an improved roundabout.
Why is the roundabout factor?
Rounds are typical road transport elements, which may be surprisingly variable. In our country, we are used to small or maximum medium roundabouts, which are between 25 and 40 meters in residential zones, or 40 to 60 meters outside the residential zones. You can rarely encounter really large roundabouts, which are greater than 60 meters and also have many lanes. These are more common abroad. Not only the diameter of the roundabout and the number of lanes, but also the radius and angle of entrances and trips may vary significantly.
And why even build roundabouts? They have several significant advantages. Compared to classic intersections, they are less accidents and fundamentally eliminate the possibility of frontal and side precipitation.
The smoothness of operation is also the advantage, as cars can also drive from all directions, without long waiting for the instructions of light signaling. Rounds are also less financially and spatially demanding, which simplifies work and planning. For car users, lower fuel consumption is more interesting thanks to the smoother driving.
In conclusion, it is also advisable to mention that roundabouts can be an interesting aesthetic element. Modern and popular are mainly plants, but there are also a number of roundabouts, which in their center have a aesthetic or indicative element, which is used in places where it is not possible to orientate well in the landscape or city.
What could a roundabout of the future look like? Webinar or hour video on this topic was presented on YouTube author of this road element on the channel
Sebastian Hasselblom, WSP. Unfortunately, the contribution is in Swedish without otitulation, but it also contains a relatively understandable visual presentation of the project.
Hasselckerkeln: New from Sweden
Is it possible to think of something new at the roundabout? Definitely. Transport specialists have long been involved in the most ideal road buildings in terms of safety and efficiency. Also from this point of view, it seems to be a revolutionary Swedish roundabout called Hasselckerkeln. This element is not only popular with experts, but also for drivers.
Swedish engineer Hasselblom came up with a new roundabout solution. It is a new type of roundabout, which is a Swedish patent and for the first time the Swedes met in Borlänge. This roundabout is significantly more compact and clearer.
The most important innovation is forced vehicles to lead vehicles using physical and optical elements, which prevents chaotic crossing to a lane or drive to the roundabout at the last minute. These are mainly narrow islets between lanes in the raid or marked hatching on the road. The lanes in the roundabout have a very clear marking that forces the vehicle driver to maintain the right track.
The benefits of the Swedish news
As already mentioned, these guide optical elements have been minimized by driver errors. Experts report that the accident rate has been reduced by up to 72 %. In addition, the capacity of this roundabout increased by one fifth. Which is a significant number that greatly helps to reduce the columns in cities.
This innovated roundabout also mentions Minister of Transport Martin Krupka in his contribution on the social network x. It is therefore quite possible that the construction of similar safe and especially significantly more efficient roundabouts will be considered iu us.
