The government of Israel marked on May 26 the so -called “Jerusalem Day”, this year marked by the 20 months of military intervention in the Gaza Strip, which has left more than 55,000 dead, and the growing tensions in the occupied West Bank. Jerusalem’s day has been officially celebrated 58 years ago, after the Israeli army has conquered the eastern part of the city, mostly Palestinian.
In 1980, the Knesset approved the so -called Jerusalem Law, which considers the city as the “eternal capital of Israel,” after being “reunited.” But the law was rejected by the United Nations Security Council, which considered it “null.”
If much of the international community recognizes the city of Telavive as the capital of Israel, the United States decided in 2017 – during the first Trump administration – recognizing Unified Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and the administration changed the Embassy of Telavive to the Holy City.
