Another banner wrote “without Nakba there is no victory”, referring to the violent expulsion of about 700,000 Palestinians when the state of Israel was created in 1948.
The far -right in the spotlight
The procession is coordinated by “Am K’lavi”, a non -profit organization whose only activity is to organize the flag day. The president is Baruch Kahane, the son of Meir Kahane, a Rabbi of Jewish superiority founded by the Kach party. Forbidden as a political party in Israel in the 1980s under anti -terrorist legislation, it is today a far -right movement.
Palestinian violence targets
Despite the history of violence along the way, the police presence in the old town was relatively small and did not do much to protect many of the Palestinians who were targeted by violence.
The far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir was among the crowds that arrived in the old town around the sunset.
