Natural remedies account for the mold in the drawers

Who has never opened a drawer and heard that wet zaffata, a mixture between closed and stale? Maybe there are also those black dots on the corners, annoying and not at all reassuring. The first reaction? It is usually panic. We immediately think of strong detergents, miraculous supermarket products or, worse, to throw everything away. Yet, sometimes the answer lies in something unsuspected, at the bottom of the belief: bicarbonate.

Yes, just what is used for a thousand things at home and which, with a few moves, can make a lot of difference. There are no complicated instructions or who knows what accessories: a few gestures are enough and a little patience. And then, let’s face it … who wants to use chemicals where towels, shirts or linen are held? Better something simple and clean, right?

Why is mold formed in the drawers?

The mold doesn’t need much to make its appearance. A closed drawer is enough, a little air exchange and maybe a garment put away with a thread of humidity. Those in wood are the worst: they retain humidity and become a perfect habitat. Often it is thought that if a fabric is dry to the touch, then it is ok. Instead no. A little water remained in the fibers can be enough to give birth to that annoying patina.

And when the smell comes, it is only the beginning. If you ignore, the spots, the real ones, which no longer go away. In some cases, the mold also indicates that there is little ventilation in the house or maybe too cold an angle. But fortunately, in most cases, it is only some easy to correct care.

Bicarbonate: a simple and powerful remedy

Among all natural remedies, bicarbonate has something more. It is not only an absorbed-dandus, but also a silent enemy of the mold. It absorbs humidity and keeps bad smells away, without making noise and without chemistry. Using it is really trivial.

Anyone can try, even those who have no experience with do-it-yourself remedies. You don’t even need to empty the whole drawer or make great maneuvers. Just dedicate a few minutes, choose a free corner and let it do everything to the baking soda. It is a small gesture, but makes a big difference. And the beauty is that it works without invading: no strong perfumes, no sticky residues, only cleaning and fresh air.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Take a glass, preferably of glass.
  • Fill it with two or three tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate.
  • Place it in a corner of the drawer, away from the fabrics.
  • Let it act for at least a week.
  • Replace it every 10-15 days to maintain the effectiveness.

Those who love perfumes can add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda: lavender for a relaxing effect, lemon for a clean sensation, tea tree for an extra anti -mold push. And if you want to take one step more, you can create a bag with gauze or light fabric, fill it with baking soda and arrange it wherever it serves: in the drawers, in the wardrobes, even inside the shoe racks.

Other useful measures against mold in the drawers

Of course, baking soda helps, but it alone does not make miracles. A little attention is also needed. Avoiding storing wet stuff is essential. Even if a shirt seems dry, it is better to let it breathe a few more hours. Arieraging the drawers every now and then costs nothing and is good: just leave them open a little, maybe while doing something else at home.

Then, it makes no sense to fill the drawers to the edge. When they are too full, the air doesn’t turn and the humidity remains there. Every now and then, a pass with a cloth and white vinegar can make miracles. There is no need to rub with force, just a delicate gesture is enough.

And for those who want to exaggerate with prevention, there are also grandmother’s methods: a bowl of rice or a little active carbon hidden among the clothes. Simple, cheap and very useful.

In the end, it is always thought that it is enough to clean to avoid problems. But the true secret is to prevent. And with some precautions and a pinch of baking soda, those drawers closed for some time can return to fresco.
