The House of Representatives approved, on Monday (26), the bill that establishes the day Marielle Franco-National Day of Defenders and Defenders of Human Rights, to be celebrated on March 14, when the PSOL councilwoman was murdered in 2018 in Rio de Janeiro alongside her driver, Anderson Gomes. The text now follows for analysis of the Federal Senate.

The vote was marked by a clash between government and opposition. The PL (Liberal Party) tried to remove the name of Marielle Franco from the title of the proposal, but the amendment was defeated by 231 votes to 202, with 8 abstentions.

Parliamentarians contrary to the proposal argued that the inclusion of the name of a public figure linked to the left would violate the principle of institutional impartiality for commemorative dates.

On the other hand, left stands and civil rights movements argued that the mention of Marielle has a symbolic and not partisan character, recognizing her trajectory as a black woman, and defender of minorities.

Currently, March 14 is already recognized as the Marielle Franco National Day to confront gender and race political violence, instituted in March 2023. The new proposal expands the scope of the date, formally linking it to the celebration of human rights advocates and advocates.

Marielle’s death is still the subject of investigation, with developments involving suspicions of involvement of militia and state agents. The case has become a global symbol of the fight against political and structural violence in Brazil.
