Supreme will investigate Bolsonaro's son for 'lobby' in the US against Brazilian authorities

Decision was taken by the judge Minister Alexandre de Moraes after request of the Attorney General’s Office

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil announced Monday the opening of an inquiry to investigate alleged acts of suspended deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro in favor of the application of sanctions against judges and Brazilian authorities by the United States.

The decision was made by Judge Alexandre de Moraes after request of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

“The decision complies with the request of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), which points to possible coercion crimes in the course of the process, obstruction of investigation of criminal organization and attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law,” reads in the STF statement.

Eduardo Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and federal deputy. Last March, he asked for a suspension of office and moved to the United States, where he conducts a media campaign, meetings and meetings with republished politicians, stating that he is working on US sanctions against judges and other Brazilian-related Brazilian authorities and their allies are investigated.

In the ruling, the judge ordered the Federal Police to check and “preserve content published by Eduardo Bolsonaro on social networks” and to summon former President Jair Bolsonaro to give testimony about his son’s performance in the United States “who, besides being directly benefited from conduct, said he was responsible for maintaining his child in the United States.”

Eduardo Bolsonaro suspended the position of deputy and began to promote a public campaign in favor of the application of sanctions by the United States government against Judge Alexandre de Moraes, a member of the Supreme Court and rapporteur of the trial in which Jair Bolsonaro is accused of leading an attempted coup.

Last week, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted, at a hearing in Parliament, there was a strong possibility for the United States to apply sanctions against Moraes.

Asked in Congress about whether the Trump administration was considering sanctions against the Brazilian judge, Marco Rubio replied: “This is now being reviewed, and it is quite possible that it will happen.”

In particular, Washington accuses him of preventing freedom of expression through restrictions on social networks.

Embies between platform X and the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court reached the climax in August last year, when the social network was blocked in Brazil, by order of Alexandre de Moraes, due to the refusal of the platform to comply with court orders.

The company, whose main shareholder is the billionaire Elon Musk, also closed the office in the country and even operated without a legal representation, which is prohibited by Brazilian law.

Musk personally accused Moraes of being a “toga dictator” and encouraged demonstrations asking for the dismissal of the judge.

Just over a month after the blockade, the company retreated, paid a fine of 28.6 million reais (4.7 million euros) and promised to respect the decisions of the Brazilian courts.

The judge also ordered the blockade of the Rumble video platform, popular among the American conservatives, for not fulfilling court orders.

In addition, Alexandre de Moraes is the judge’s rapporteur judge in the first class of the Supreme Court in the trial on the attempted coup against Lula da Silva who had Jair Bolsonaro as a mentor.
