Migrants from Italy are heading to Albania, where their asylum applications are processed.

The Italian authorities said on Tuesday that they had taken a group of 26 unsuccessful asylum seekers to the Migrants in Albania’s Location Center under the Rome administration. The Italian government has not published their nationality or other details, TASR writes, according to AP report.

The ship was transferred by migrants from the Italian port of Brindisi to the Albanian port of Shengjin, approximately 65 kilometers northeast of Tirana. Migrants usually move to the second center in Gjader, also managed by Rome.

Length of stay unclear

It is not clear how long migrants will stay in Albania. According to Italian laws, asylum seekers may be unsuccessful for up to 18 months. There is no information about the first group of 40 migrants who were taken to Albania in April. The local media issued unconfirmed reports that 16 of them were returned to Italy.

Facilities in both Albanian cities were originally built for the processing of asylum applications of people who were detained in the Mediterranean. Rome tried to discourage future asylum seekers from attempts to get to Italy. However, since they were opened in October, the Italian courts have prevented the authorities from their use, and small groups of migrants who were sent there returned to Italy.

A new government plan

The Italian right -wing government of Prime Minister Giorgie Meloni approved a decree in March, which will be used as a clue for people whose asylum applications have already been rejected.
