Heat Attention: Thermometers will reach 37ºC, there are districts under warning

This Wednesday, the thermometers will reach 37ºC. The IPMA warns that the maximum temperatures will be high and persistent over the next few days and it is expected that Thursday and Friday are the hottest days – there are regions of the country that will even reach 40ºC. Hot and dry weather is due to a hot air mass from North Africa.

The districts of Beja, Évora and Setúbal are this Wednesday under yellow warning due to heat. The warning is in force from 09h00 and until 21h00 on Thursday.

Tomorrow, also the districts of Bragança, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Lisbon, Portalegre, Santarém and Vila Real will be under the same warning.

IPMA warns that maximum temperatures will be high and persistent during the next few days, and in the central and southern regions of the country Thermometers can even exceed 38 degrees.

Thursday and Friday will be the hottest days. On Saturday, predictions point to a slight descent of temperature.

DGS recommendations

The Directorate-General for Health has left several recommendations that should take into account to protect itself from high temperatures.

DGS advises regular consumption of water, avoiding the ingestion of alcohol, and that is Avoid sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00recommending the Use of wide clotheswhich cover most of your body, and wide tabs hat and sunglassesas well as 30 protection sunscreen 30 and renew your application every two hours.

Heat increases fire risk

With increasing temperatures, relative humidity of less than 30%, and tropical nights, “significantly increases the risk of rural fire, especially in the north and center and southern region”.

It recommends, therefore, the “adequacy of behaviors and attitudes in the face of danger of rural fire, namely the adoption of the necessary prevention and precautionary measures, paying special attention to the evolution of the danger of fire in this period”.
