The Japanese government announced on Tuesday that part of the slightly radioactive soil from Fukushima plans to be used in flower beds in front of the office of Prime Minister Šigero Išiba. He wants to make it clear to the public that the re -use of such land is safe, AP reported, TASR writes.

The soil has been removed in the Fukushima Prefecture during decontamination work after a nuclear accident in 2011 and has been stored in the intermediate since then. According to the authorities, part of it has already reached a safe level of radiation and can be reused. The government said on Tuesday that In addition to flower beds, it also plans its other use in the premises of government institutions.

The crash in Fukushima after a devastating tsunami wave resulted in a large number of radioactive materials. Japan therefore faces a large volume of soil, cut trees and other natural materials collected during decontamination work. They are stored in the facility between Futaba and Okuma, near Fukushima. The government plans to find the places for their final storage or use by 2045. It is about 14 million cubic meters of soil and other materials.

Authorities suggest that low -risk material could be used, for example, in the construction of roads and other public projects across the country. The Japanese Ministry of the Environment said that such land could be eg. used as a base layer and safely covered with a sufficiently thick layer of pure soil to make Radiation level kept at a negligible level.

However, the public in Japan is still concerned about these plans. The AP added that after the protests of citizens, the government was forced to resign from experimentation using a part of the slightly radioactive soil in flower beds in several public parks in Tokyo and its surroundings.
